How do you paint Jeremiah, Judas and Jesus...? Here is Rembrandt’s answer Each are real human beings. Jesus, really dead, being hauled down from the cross. This is a lifeless human body and by daring to depict him this way makes the resurrection of that same body so much more amazing, miraculous and wonderful. Judas has done his worst, has been paid the money for his betrayal of his Lord. And knows now the depth of shame and sorrow - he has done the worst thing (which turns out to be the necessary thing) for coins scattered and meaningless on the ground. His agony is so real, and he will take his life in despair And Jeremiah, he is an old man, full of years and lamenting what he had prophesied, the fall of Jerusalem. He is robed richly and has stature and weight, and yet his vulnerable honest and real foot is shown. He existed, lived, will die and bears the weight of years of wisdom and understanding in is face, resting on his hand. Yet alongside these deep images, painted by a young man in his 20s with searing honesty, is a final painting of light and hope.
